Palliative care is an approach which improves the quality of life for patients and their families, who are facing problems associated with life-threatening illnesses. Through the prevention and relief of suffering, palliative care aims to identify problems early, assess and treat the pain, as well as other related discomforts, be it physical, psychosocial or spiritual. At the moment, the number of in-patients with life-limiting illnesses who require specialist palliative care at UMMC exceeds 30 at any time. Of these, 85% are breast cancer patients.

Since 2004, the breast surgeons at UMMC provide care within the palliative care corner in the surgical ward. Recognising the need for a specialised palliative care centre, the PRIDE-UMMC Palliative Care Centre was established in September 2012 to nurture the palliative care culture within UMMC.

Two UMMC palliative care physicians currently works full time at the centre. What is needed now is the additional funds to increase the patients’ and their families’ physical comfort and to reduce stress, and hopefully to pull through this difficult phase of a cancer patient’s life journey.

We therefore appeal for your kind help to assist in the overall upkeep and to sustain its operations. With your kindness and generosity, it is hope that many more could benefit and spend their last days in utmost comfort and pain-free. To donate, kindly log on to
